Koondukkili (lit.The Caged Parrot), also spelled as Goondukili,[1] is a 1954 Indian Tamil-language romance film directed and co-produced by T. R. Ramanna. The film stars M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan and B. S. Saroja in the lead roles.

Plot

In the Tamil Country of the 50s...

Thangaraj (MGR) and Jeeva (Sivaji Ganesan) are friends.

Thangaraj (MGR) is married to Mangala (B. S. Saroja) and they have a son.

Thangaraj goes to jail for a crime committed by Jeeva.

Mangala is left with no money or house to live.

Jeeva tries to help Mangala with the sinister motive of having a relationship with her.

After she repeatedly refuses his attempts to help her, Jeeva starts to sadisticially taunt her, finally he wins.

Meanwhile, Sokki (T. D. Kuchalakumari) is in love with Jeeva.

Thangaraj is released from prison and saves Mangala from Jeeva.

KOONDUKKILI treats the issues of poverty, greed, and the abuse of women.

Production

This is the unique film where the Tamil megastars, "Puratchi Thalaivar" "Makkal Thilagam" MGR and "Nadigar Thilagam" Sivaji, had acted together.

The story, the screenplay and the dialogues were by Vindhan, a social activist and reformist writer.

Soundtrack

The music was composed by K. V. Mahadevan. Lyrics by Mahakavi Bharathiyar, Thanjai N. Ramaiah Dass, Vindhan, Ka. Mu. Sheriff & A. Maruthakasi. Playback singers are T. M. Soundararajan, K. V. Mahadevan, V. N. Sundharam, P. A. Periyanayaki, T. V. Rathinam, Radha Jayalakshmi & K. Rani.

Reception

Koondukkili was a commercial failure in its original release, but as it remained the only film in which the two leading stars (MGR and Sivaji Ganesan) acted together, it gained historical reputation over time.[2]
