The Kolkata Knight Riders–Royal Challengers Bangalore rivalry is a sports rivalry between the cricket teams of Kolkata Knight Riders representing West Bengal and Royal Challengers Bangalore representing Karnataka in the Indian Premier League (IPL).[1] The two teams have played each other in the IPL matches on 22 occasions with KKR winning 13 of them while RCB winning 9 of them and have played against each other in only one Champions League Twenty20 encounter.
Background
The rivalry is also considered as one of the hottest rivalries in the history of IPL with the very first match of the 2008 Indian Premier League tournament was contested between these two teams.[2] Kolkata Knight Riders wrapped a whopping 140 run victory over the RCB team in RCB's home soil with Brendon McCullum's supreme knock of unbeaten 158 runs off the very first match in the history of the tournament powered KKR to a heavy total of 222/3 in 20 overs while Royal Challengers Bangalore bowled out for 82 runs in 15.1 overs.[3] This rivalry is considered as the oldest rivalry in IPL history and also termed as the third biggest rivalry in the Indian Premier League.[4]
In the 2017 Indian Premier League, Royal Challengers Bangalore recorded the lowest ever total by any team in the history of IPL after folding for just 49 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders when chasing a ease target of 132 runs.[5][6] At the 2018 Indian Premier League auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought former Kolkata Knight Riders team players such as Umesh Yadav, Chris Woakes, Colin de Grandhomme and Nathan Coulter-Nile who were all part of the KKR side where they combined to dismiss RCB for a score of 49 in a group league match in the 2017 season.
