Kokumo

Kokumo is a musician, poet and activist from Chicago. Kokumo, who is herself a black transgender woman, won a Lambda Literary Award in 2017 for transgender poetry with her book Reacquainted With Life.[1] The book discusses transphobia and racism but also critiques the culture around activism.[2]

In 2012 Kokumo was the lead organizer for the first trans march event to take place in Chicago.[3] In 2013 Kokumo released an EP of her music titled There Will Come a Day with a music video for the title track meant to bring awareness towards violence affecting trans women of color. [4]
