Koinothrix is a genus of spiders in the Linyphiidae family. It was first described in 1981 by Rudy Jocqué. As of 2017, it contains only one species, Koinothrix pequenops.[1] The species is endemic to the island of Santiago in the Cape Verde islands.[2]

Description

Only the male of Koinothrix pequenops is known. For a linyphiid, it is of medium size, with a total body length of about 1.5 mm. The fourth leg is the longest, with a total length of about 2.2 mm. K. pequenops is mostly orangish brown or brownish orange in colour, except for the abdomen, which is white with red markings. The eyes are very small, both rows being recurved. The palpal bulb resembles that of Tapinocyba, with a long embolus and an associated T-shaped projection.[3]

Taxonomy

The species and genus were first described by Rudy Jocqué in 1981,[1] on the basis of a single male specimen originally collected by S. Pequeno in 1958.[3] Jocqué states that the genus name is derived from koinos, meaning hollow,[note 1] and thrix, meaning spine.[3] The species name pequenops refers to the small eyes of the species, and is based on the surname of the collector, Pequeno, which means "small" in Spanish, plus ops, eye.[3]

Notes

  1. The Greek word for "hollow" is koilos not koinos, as for example in the derivation of the word "coelenterate" from koilos, hollow, and enteron, intestine.[4][5]
