Kodanchery is a town in Kozhikode district in the state of Kerala, India.[1]

Nearby towns include Thamarassery, Thiruvambady, Nellipoyil , Thusharagiri Falls. It is under Thiruvambady Assembly Constituency.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Kodanchery had a population of 18461 with 9233 males and 9228 females.[1]

Thiruvambady, Pullurampara, Nellipoyil and Engapuzha are nearby villages of kodanchery. St. Mary's Church and St. Joseph's HSS school is located in the heart of the city. It is a plantation destination that abounds in rubber, arecanut, pepper, ginger and various spices. The famous tourist destination Thusharagiri waterfalls is just 10 km from Kodancherry town.

Culture and people

Though the population is diverse, Kodancherry is a hub of Christians mainly Saint Thomas Christians It is known as mini Kottayam as most of the people are migrated from different parts of Kottayam.

The history of the Kodancherry Grama Panchayat is the success of the struggle and resistance of the sacrifices of the hardworking farmers seeking fertile soil.The first church in Kodanchery was started at Ambalakunnu near Kannoth.As the population increased, it was moved to Ambattupadi for convenience, and later to the town where the Kodanchery LP School is situated.

Tourism

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Malabar region of Kerala is in Thusharagiri and it is considered as the major tourist destination in Malabar region with five water falls right in the middle of the forest. "Thusharagiri" literally meaning "snow capped mountains" and affectionately . As the name suggests, land and water have struck an extraordinary kinship at Thusharagiri (mist capped peaks). The waterfalls on the backdrop of the Western Ghats provide an exhilarating and spellbinding sight to the visitor. The added focus laid on this unique eco-Tourism destination by the Tourism Department, Govt. of Kerala, has in a way helped promote this area to a large segment of potential tourists. The best roar of the waterfalls can be enjoyed from September to November. The waterfall with its gentle spray is sure to soothe every eye. The cascading waters of the waterfall slides past with surfy smiles. Two streams originating from the Western Ghats meet here to form the Chalippuzha River. The river diverges into three waterfalls creating a snowy spray, which gives the name, 'Thusharagiri'. , The highest waterfall is the Thenpara (honey hill) that falls from an altitude of 75 metres. The place offers challenging trekking and rock-climbing through river path and numerous waterfalls. The main attraction of the Thusharagiri is also Trekking. Thusharagiri offers endless scope for trekking, rock climbing and wild life sanctuary visits. The plantation destination that abounds in rubber, arecanut, pepper, ginger and spices, is also a trekker's delight. Trekkers start early morning from the second waterfall on the hills and climb up through the pristine dense evergreen forests teeming with exotic birds and animals to reach Vythiri in Wayanad district by evening. There is a dam located around 45km from Calicut. There are actually 5 waterfalls but we can cover only 3 of them in one day, otherwise we need to stay in forest with wild animals in tent. It is very dangerous and risky. Unexpected waterfalls may occur at any time through any path of the forest. If it occur we can't escape from it. We should purchase food for one day in advance from Kodancherry (10KM from Thusharagiri) or Chembu Kadavu (4 Km) before start the trekking. There are new restaurants came up at Thusharagiri also.

Transportation

Kodancherry village connects to other parts of India through Calicut city on the west and Thamarassery town on the east. National highway No.66 passes through Kozhikode and the northern stretch connects to Goa and Mumbai. The southern stretch connects to Cochin and Trivandrum. The eastern National Highway No.54 going through Adivaram connects to Kalpetta, Mysore and Bangalore. The nearest airports are at Kannur and Kozhikode. The nearest railway station is at Kozhikode.
