History

The Kingsport Times

The first edition of the Kingsport Times was first published on April 27, 1916[1] by founder and publisher Cy Lyle. The editor was R.D. “Bob” Kinkead. The paper published weekly. In November of that year, the newspaper was purchased by Bob Kinkead and his brother Joe.

Three years later, the Kingsport Times was bought by Thomas H. Pratt and Isaac Shuman, who were working at the Bristol Herald Courier. Shuman became editor and Pratt general manager.

The new owners published their statement of purpose: “The Times will try to print all the news of Kingsport and this section accurately and without bias, so that it might inform completely and reflect truly the activities — civic, industrial, commercial, agricultural and social — of Kingsport and the region of which it is the center. Service to Kingsport shall be our watchword.”

In 1920, the newspaper was reorganized with a new ownership that included Pratt and Howard Long, and under the Long-Pratt team the Times became a daily on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1924.

The Kingsport Times News

In 1938, a group of Kingsport businessmen headed by insurance executive C.P. Edwards Jr., bought the newspaper. Edwards became president and promoted W. J. McAuliffe to editor.

The newspaper became the Kingsport Times News in 1944[2] when the morning Kingsport News was acquired.
