Kiawah people

The Kiawah were a constituent group of the Cusabo people[1] of what became South Carolina. When English colonists arrived and settled on the Ashley River, the neighboring Kiawah were friendly. However, by 1682, disease and warfare had reduced Kiawah numbers to about 160.[2]

Kiawah Island, South Carolina, bears their name.
