Kevin Luckassen (born 27 July 1993) is a Dutch-Ghanaian footballer who plays for EFL League One side Northampton Town. He previously played for AZ but never made an appearance for the first team.

Club Career

AZ Alkmaar/Ross County

Born in Eindhoven, Luckassen started playing football in the street, leading him to play for his first youth club at Amstelveen Heemrad when he was eight after his mother took him there.[1] He then played for AVV Zeeburgia and AFC Amsterdam before joining AZ Alkmaar in 2009, where he spent five years at the youth team before turning professionally.[2][1]

He was promoted to the AZ first team squad as an 18-year-old at the start of the 2011–12 season after signing his first professional contract.[3] He made his AZ Alkmaar debut in the second round of KNVB Cup against FC Groningen, which they went on to win 4–2 after the game went extra time.[4] However, Luckassen did not make another first team appearance for the next two seasons. At the end of the 2012–13 season, he was released.[5]

In July 2013, he signed a three-year deal with Scottish Premiership club Ross County.[6] He made his debut in a 2–1 defeat against Celtic at Celtic Park in the opening game of the season.[7] Despite suffering from injuries,[8] Luckassen continued to be used in first team ins and out in the first half of the season, making 16 appearances in all competitions.[9]

Slovan Liberec

After six months at Ross County, Luckassen left Ross County to join Gambrinus Liga side Slovan Liberec after the club accepted their bid.[10] Days later, the move was confirmed.[11]

Luckassen made his Slovan Liberec debut, where he started and played for 73 minutes before being substituted, in a 2–2 draw against FK Mladá Boleslav on 23 February 2014.[12] Having made two appearance so far, Luckassen scored his first goal on 7 March 2014, as Slovan Liberec win 1-0 against Zbrojovka Brno.[13] He followed up his second goal two weeks later on 21 March 2014, in a 3-0 win over Jablonec.[14] However, Luckassen suffered an injury in the first half and was substituted as a result, in a 4–1 loss against Sparta Pragie on 27 April 2014.[15] Despite missing out for the rest of the season, he went on to make 10 appearances and scoring 2 times in all competitions.

In the 2014–15 season, Luckassen returned from injury and played his first match of the season, in a 3–0 win over Košice in the second round of the Europa League, second leg to go through to the next round.[16] It wasn’t until on 22 August 2014 when he scored his first goal for the club of the season, in a 2–2 draw against FK Teplice.[17] Luckassen regained his first team place throughout the 2014–15 season.[18] By April, Lukassen scored two more goals against Mladá Boleslav and FK Teplice.[19] At the end of the 2014–15 season, he went on to make 24 appearances and scoring 3 times in all competitions. He also helped the side win the Czech Cup after beating FK Jablonec 2–1 in the final.[20]

In the 2015–16 season, Luckassen scored on his first appearance of the season on 16 August 2015, in a 1–1 draw against FK Jablonec.[21] Two months later on 23 October 2015, Luckassen scored again on his first Europa League appearance, in a 1–1 draw against FC Groningen.[22] Nevertheless, he scored again on 9 April 2016, in a 2–1 win over Sigma Olomouc.[23] Despite suffering from an injury setback,[24] Luckassen went on to make 13 appearances and scoring 3 times in all competitions. The club’s director Jan Nezmar reflected about his season, saying that he suffered a lot of injuries and failed meet expectations because of that.[25]

SKN St. Pölten

Luckassen joined SKN St. Pölten on 8 July 2016, signing a two–year contract with the club.[26]

Luckassen made his SKN St. Pölten debut, where he set up a goal for Manuel Hartl, who scored a header, in a 2–1 loss against Austria Wien in the opening game of the season.[27] He then scored his first goal for the club on 15 October 2016, in a 1–1 draw against Admira Wacker Mödling.[28] This was followed up by scoring in a 5–1 loss against Red Bull Salzburg on 23 October 2016.[29] It wasn’t until on 29 April 2017 when he scored twice and set up one of the goals, in a 3–3 draw against Rheindorf Altach.[30] Despite missing out several matches during the 2016–17 season,[31] Luckassen went on to make 25 appearances and scoring 5 times in all competitions.

However, ahead of the 2017–18 season, Luckassen's contract got terminated by the club on 19 July 2017, after a fight with a teammate during the training.[32]

Northampton Town

On 8 March 2018, Luckassen joined EFL League One side Northampton Town on a deal until the end of the season.[33]

Luckassen scored the equaliser in his debut against Bristol Rovers on 10 March 2018.[34] However, he soon lost his first team place after suffering a back injury and was sidelined for the rest of the season.[35] He was released by Northampton at the end of the 2017–18 season, following their relegation.[36]

International career

Though born in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Luckassen expressed desire to play for Ghana, as his parents are Ghanaian.[37] He previously represented Netherlands U18[38] and Netherlands U19.[39]

Personal Life

Lukassen is an older brother of Derrick Luckassen, who like Kevin, started his professional career at AZ Alkmaar, and Samuel Brobbey.[40][3]

Growing up, he supported AFC Ajax, due to his association at Amstelveen Heemrad and growing up in Amsterdam.[1] In addition to speaking Dutch, Luckassen speaks English and currently learning Czech.[1]
