Kevin John Foster[1] MP (born 31 December 1978) is a British Conservative Party politician, representing the Torbay Parliamentary constituency since 2015.

Early life and career

Kevin Foster was born in Plymouth on 31 December 1978. He was educated at Hele's School and the University of Warwick (LLB, 2000; LLM, 2001).[2] After graduating from university, he worked in the West Midlands as a paralegal and secretary for a number of firms.[3]

Foster stood successfully as the Conservative candidate in the Cheylesmore ward of Coventry City Council in 2002, being re-elected in 2004, 2007 and 2011.[4] He served as Leader of the opposition for two years in Coventry, before standing down in 2013 to go and seek election in Torbay.[5]

Parliamentary career

Foster unsuccessfully fought Coventry South in 2010, coming second to Labour's Jim Cunningham.

Foster was elected at the 2015 general election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Torbay in 2015.[6][7] His election agent was Alison Hernandez, who has been subject to an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission over allegations she failed to properly declare election expenses that were submitted in her role as an election agent.[8]

In May 2016, it emerged that Foster was one of a number of Conservative MPs being investigated by police in the United Kingdom general election, 2015 party spending investigation, for allegedly spending more than the legal limit on constituency election campaign expenses.[9] However, in May 2017, the Crown Prosecution Service said that while there was evidence of inaccurate spending returns, it did not "meet the test" for further action.[10]

Foster was opposed to Brexit prior to the 2016 referendum.[11]

In the June 2017 General Election, he received 27,141 votes, meaning that he increased his majority to 14,283 over his opposition.

Personal life

Kevin Foster is married to Hazel Foster. They met in Coventry, where Hazel was a fellow Conservative parliamentary candidate. With a 25 year age gap, Foster has been compared to the French politician Emmanuel Macron, who is also substantially younger than his partner.[12]
