Kenya Police Criminal Investigation Department
Kenya Police Criminal Investigation Department is a semi autonomous directorate of the National police service responsible for investigating complex cases. It is commonly referred to by the initials CID. It is headed by a Director who reports to the Inspector General of Police. Due to the sensitivity of the position, the Director of the CID is appointed by the President of Kenya. The current Director is George Maingi Kinoti who was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta on 5th January 2018 to replace Ndegwa Muhoro. Before his appointment he was previously the National Police Spokesman based in the office of the Inspector General of Police. The CID headquarters are located on Kiambu Road, Nairobi.
This department is further divided into sub-departments, namely:

- The investigation Branch
- Anti Banking Fraud Unit
- Special Crime Prevention Unit
- Anti Terrorism Unit
- Ballistics Unit
- Anti Narcotics Unit
- Bomb Squad
- Cyber forensics
- Forensic Department
- Kanga Squad
In every county, the CID department is headed by a County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) who reports to the County Police Commander. At Divisional level, the CID department is headed by a Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) who reports to the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD). Kenya's CID Department is tasked primarily with intelligence gathering and evidence collection where crimes of a complex nature have occurred. However, it has been dodged with numerous problems including lack on modern forensic laboratories, fingerprint identification equipment and DNA testing equipment.[1] Also there has been bad blood between the department's detectives and uniformed officers. However early this year, the CID announced plans to equip and staff a 5.7 billion Kenya shillings forensics lab at its headquarters at Mazingira House Kiambu Road.
