Kateryna Babkina (Ukrainian: Катерина Бабкіна) (born 22 July 1985 in Ivano-Frankivsk) is young and established Ukrainian writer and screenwriter. She’s an author of four poetry collections (St.Elmo’s fires 2002, The Mustard 2011, Painkillers and Sleeping pills 2014, Charmed for love 2017), one novel (Sonia, 2013) and two collections of stories (Leloo after you, 2008 and Happy naked people 2016). She has also written 2 books for kids, which are extremely popular in Ukraine, the last one, The Cappy and the whale, dedicated to cancer sick kids became a big charity project in Ukraine and caused a huge wave of fun-art like toys, candies, posters, t-shirts and sweaters collection and even tattoos. Her stories, essays and lyrics had been translated into English, Swedish, Polish, German, French, Spanish, Romanian, Check and Russian and published (as Kateryna Babkina or Katya Babkina) in Esquire Ukraine, Le Monde, Harper’s Bazaar, The Kenyon Review (USA), German-Polish magazine Radar and in a lot of anthologies, magazines and reviews in Ukraine, Poland, Romania and Germany. Play after her stories named “Hamlet Babylon” was staged in Kyiv, Vienna and Geneva. Her books already were twice in long list of BBC Book of the year prize, in 2016 her novel was translated to German and published in Austria in Haymon Verlag (worldwide rights belong to Haymon Verlag). There are few short movies based on her stories, filmed and shown on film festivals in Ukraine, Serbia and NYC, at 2016 short film after her script was screened at Cannes Film Festival in young director’s selection. She had participated as a journalist in the webdoc project Gol! Ukraine(for Le Monde and ARTE Documentaire ). "The Little Book of Hygge" by Meik Wiking was translated to Ukrainian by Kateryna Babkina in 2017. Kateryna Babkina’s book of poetry was published in Hebrew in June 2017. The book is titled "Ask the Same for Everybody".


Biography

Kateryna Babkina was born in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine on 22 July 1985. She attended Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv to study journalism and graduated in 2007 going on to work as a freelance journalist.[1]

Career

Babkina has branched out from journalism to other writings. Whilst at university in 2002, Babkina published her first collection of poetry, titled St Elmo's Fire. She subsequently published two more books of poetry, The Mustard in 2011 and Painkillers and Sleeping Pills in 2014.[2]

In 2008 Babkina released a collection of short stories called Leloo After You,[2] before going on to release a full length novel in 2013 called Sonia. Sonia is the story of a girl trying to find her father when she becomes pregnant. Whilst looking in the city where she was born, she starts a relationship with a man who turns out to be her father. The book was well received, and shortlisted to the final 20 for BBC Book of the year 2013.[3][4] In April 2016 Babkina published a collection short stories, Happy naked people.[5]

Babkina took part in the 2013 Kinofest NYC festival, writing the screenplay for a short film, Evil, where a young pregnant girl cannot distinguish between her nightmares and reality. She also made a video rendition of some of her poetry in the same festival.[6]

Babkina wrote a 2014 children's book of short stories called The Pumpkin Year.[7] She followed it up with another children's book, Cap and Whale, in 2015.

In 2016, Babkina wrote the play Hamlet.Babylon, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, which played in Kiev and Geneva.[2]

"The Little Book of Hygge" by Meik Wiking was translated to Ukrainian by Kateryna Babkina in 2017.

Kateryna Babkina’s book of poetry was published in Hebrew in June 2017. The book is titled "Ask the Same for Everybody".
