Karolina (painter)
Carol Wells[1] (Boston, 1939), or KAROLINA, or ΚΑΡΟΛΙΝΑ as is the signature of her paintings, is a naïve painter of Mykonos.[2] She was born in the US and since 23 years old she lives in Mykonos, painting sights of Mykonos and selling her works to tourists.
She was born at 25 December 1939, in Boston and studied in the Boston School of Fine Arts.[1][3] In 1962 she visited Mykonos and she lives there since, selling her paintings to tourists and locals.
Karolina is characterized as "legendary", "prominent citizen" of Mykonos,[3] queen of the art scene of Mykonos,[4] the famous painter of Mykonos,[5] "the significant painter of the island"[6] and as a "real image of the island"[7] who "is giving colour to Matogiannia and the harbour".[8]
Her work is referred to as the preferred one of the locals, for decades, as well as that it has international appeal,[9] that it captures in a magical way the simplicity of Greek life,[4] with naïve style,[2] which is recognizable.[6]
The life of Karolina has been presented in Greek television[10] and she was an inspiration for a short story by Peter Selgin[11] and for a poem of Neil Meili.[12]
