Kanepi is a small borough (alevik) in Kanepi Parish, Põlva County in southeastern Estonia.[1]

The name Kanep means cannabis in Estonian.[2] In March 2018 it was announced the citizens had voted to have the cannabis leaf in the coat of arms.[3] In May 2018 the municipality puts cannabis leaf on flag, Andru Seeme (Mayor) said.[4]


Hugo Treffner (1845–1912), educator, founder of the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium was born in Kanepi as a son of a family of local parish clerk.
