Kalinga (caste)

Kalinga (also known as Kalingi/Kalinji/kalanji/Kaalinga) is an Indian caste,[1][2] found mainly in Ganjam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam. They were formerly the inhabitants of ancient Kalinga country.[3]

History

In the Ganjam District Manual of 1918, they are described as "traders and shopkeepers, principally prevalent in the Chicacole division".[4] The Vizagapatam manual describes Kalinga Komatis as nominally Vaisyas. The manual also identifies Kalingu as a caste of paiks (fighting men).[5]
