Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi is a popular ghazal from the movie Khamoshi. It was originally sung by Jagjit Singh[1][2] but the version by Ghulam Ali , Asad Amanat Ali and Abida Parveen is also popular.[3] It is written by Ibn-e-Insha. This song was also sung by Kumar Sanu in the movie Jiyala, which was also a semihit in the 1990s. The song was also sung by Nighat Akbar on PTV (Pakistan Television) in 1970's before the separation of East Pakistan and becoming Bangladesh.[4]

Lyrics

"Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi, Shab bhar raha charchaa tera. Kuchh ne kaha ki ye chaand hai, kucch ne kaha chehra tera."

English Translation : Yesternight was the Fourteenth, (full moon night, depicts here as the beauty of moon at its peak or simply most beautiful) and whole night there was the discussion about you. Some said it's the moon, some said it's your face!


"Hum bhi wahiN maujood the, Hum se bhi sab poochha kiye. Hum hans diye, hum chup rahe, Manzoor tha parda tera."

English Translation : I was also present there, They also asked me about what I thought. I simply smiled, kept quiet and honored your privacy/anonymity.


"Is shehar mein kis se mileN, Hum se to chhuti mehfileN. Har shaks tera naam le,Har shaks diwana tera."

English Translation : In this city who am i supposed to meet, I had to leave all the gatherings. Every person seem to discussing you, every person is madly in love with you.


"Kooche ko tere chHod kar, jogi hi ban jayeN magar. Jungle tere, Parbat tere, Basti teri, sehra tera"

English Words Translation : Kooche - Cul-De-Sac/street crossing referred here as address/home. Jogi - monk, Sehra - desert"

English (meaning/reference) - "I will convert to a monk and leave your village but, my dilemma is that even as a monk I will see you in these jungles, mountains, towns and deserts"


"Be-dard sunni ho to chal, Kehta hai kya achchi ghazal. Aashiq tera, rusva tera, shayar tera, ‘Insha’ tera."

English Translation Meaning/reference : Listen to my aching heart in your love that recites a beautiful poem/ghazal. Everything belongs to you and you only, my love, my humility, my poetry, and me - myself, Insha (name of the poet/Author Ibne Insha)
