KFBR (defunct)

KFBR was a radio station on 1340 AM serving Nogales, Arizona. It operated from 1967 to 1983.

History

KNOG

KFBR was not the first radio station on the frequency in Nogales. It was preceded by KNOG, which changed hands constantly in its history; owners included Border Broadcasting Co., Old Pueblo Broadcasting Co., Charles F. and Alice B. Montano,[1] Carleton W. Morris[2], Madelon H. Cowling, Richard H. Ward,[3] and Lloyd Burlingham.[4] Old Pueblo was 48% owned by Gene Autry and owned the station alongside KOOL radio in Phoenix and KOPO in Tucson.[5] In 1964, KNOG presented 30 hours a week of Spanish programming.[6] The station disappeared in the mid-1960s, but the frequency would not stay dead for long.

KFBR

KFBR signed on September 29, 1967. It was owned by Frank Baranowski, and like KNOG, it operated with 250 watts on 1340 kHz; it also used the former station's facilities, having acquired them when the station was sold in a sheriff's auction for back taxes. Baranowski died in 1975. In 1981, KFBR had a format of middle-of-the-road music with a handful of Spanish programs, as well as an affiliation with the ABC Information network.[7][8] The only other station in Nogales, Arizona, during this time period was Top 40-formatted KAYN 98.3, which signed on in 1978; the station later moved toward Tucson.

The station disappeared in the early 1980s for failure to file an application to renew its license. An application to raise daytime power to 500 watts, filed in 1983, was returned.
