K. K. Balakrishnan

K.K. Balakrishnan (20 June 1927 — 1 September 2000) was an Indian Politician. He was a minister in the Government of Kerala, holding various portfolios including Irrigation, Transport, Devaswom and Harijan welfare.[1][2]

Political life

K.K. Balakrishnan entered politics as a worker of the Indian National Congress, he later became the Executive member of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, Member of All India Congress Committee and Organizing Secretary INTUC Kerala.

Balakrishnan became elected to the Travancore – Cochin Legislative Assembly in 1954 and subsequently to the Second Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1960 from Chalakudy, as an Indian National Congress candidate. In 1970, 1977 and 1980 he was elected from Chelakkara, in 1982 from Trithala and in 1991 from Vaikom constituency.

During his long public life, he served as Chief Whip in Congress Legislature Party, Director of District Co-operative Bank Trichur, Chairman of Committee on the Welfare of SC/ST (1973–74) & (1979–81), General Secretary and President of State Depressed Classes League and Member of University of Calicut Senate.

K. K. Balakrishnan expired on 1.9.2000. The Kerala Legislature paid its homage to him on 21.12.2000.

Personal life

K.K. Balakrishnan hails from a small village, Nedupuzha in Thrissur district of Kerala. The late P.C. Rugmini was his wife and they have one son and four daughters.
