Judith Linhares
Judith Linhares (born 1940) is an American visual artist, who is particularly well known for her colorful, figurative paintings. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.[1] Linhares grew up in Southern California and studied art at California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California.[2]
Early life and education
Judith Linhares was born in 1940 in Pasadena, California.[3] In 1964 she attained her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree from the California College of the Arts.[1] In 1970 she attained a Masters of Arts from the same institution.[1]
Work
Linhares works in a variety of media, including sculpture and print, but she is perhaps best known for her brightly-colored, figurative paintings. Her paintings often reference feminism, gender, mythology, and narrative.[4] In 1978 Linhares was included in the group exhibition Bad Painting, curated by Marcia Tucker at the New Museum in New York.[5] The exhibition included thirteen other artists, including William Wegman (photographer) and Joan Brown.[6] The exhibition was not meant to categorize the works as literally bad, but rather was a statement on their disregard for historical attributes of what made a "good" painting.[6] In 1980, Linhares permanently moved to New York with her partner, the poet Stephen Spretnjak.[5] She has cited the artists Max Beckmann, Edvard Munch and James Ensor as having an influence on her work.[5]
Recognition
In 1997 Linhares was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.[7] In 2008 Linhares received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for her work in the arts.[8] In 2012 the artist also received a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant for Painting.[9] Most recently Linhares received the 2017 Artist Award from the Artists’ Legacy Foundation.[10]
Representation
Judith Linhares is represented by Various Small Fires in Los Angeles, CA.[11] and P.P.O.W. Gallery, New York.[12]
