Matias is from the Dominican Republic. Her family moved to the United States when she was five years old. Matias earned her bachelor's degree in political science and criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School.[1] She worked as an immigration lawyer before going to work for her family's construction company. She ran for the 16th Essex seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in the 2016 elections, defeating incumbent Marcos Devers.[2]

In 2017, Matias declared her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Massachusetts's 3rd congressional district.[3] Matias overperformed expectations, finishing in third place despite having less campaign funds than her opponents.[4]
