After is an adult romance film directed by Jenny Gage and the screenplay written by Susan McMartin. It is based on the 2014 novel of the same name written by Anna Todd. The film stars Josephine Langford as Tessa Young, a college student who begins a turbulent relationship with badboy Hardin Scott, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The film will be released on April 12, 2019, by Aviron Pictures.[1]

Plot

After follows the journey of self-discovery and sexual awakening of Tessa. A dedicated student, dutiful daughter and loyal girlfriend to her high school sweetheart, Tessa enters her first year of University with grand ambitions for her future.  Her guarded world opens up when she meets the dark and mysterious Hardin Scott. A brooding rebel that Tessa would typically shun, she is drawn by his magnetic energy that will change her forever.

Production

In 2014, Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to adapt After to the theaters. Susan McMartin wrote the screenplay and Jennifer Gibgot was in charge of producing the film. [3] But as the project was in a slower than expected process. In 2017, Todd didn't want to renew the contract and got the rights back to it. But she soon sold them to a smaller studio where she could be more involved in production and have more control over the film. Susan McMartin, who until then was After's screenwriter, left the project in mid-2017. Tamara Chestna was hired to make updates on the script written by McMartin, director Jenny Gage was also responsible for the final revisions of the script.

Producers are Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon of CalMaple Films, and Jennifer Gibgot of Offspring Entertainment. CalMaple, Voltage Pictures and Diamond Film Productions are financing the film. Wattpad’s Aron Levitz, Anna Todd and Dennis Pelino from CalMaple are also producing. Meadow Williams and Swen Temmel from Diamond Films will serve as executive producers along with Adam Shankman of Offspring Entertainment, Voltage’s Nicolas Chartier and Jonathan Deckter, CalMaple’s Scott Karol, and Wattpad’s Eric Lehrman.

Direction

On November 28, 2017, Anna Todd announced that Jenny Gage would be the director of the feature.[4]

Casting

In January 2018, auditions began for the main actors of movie. Actors like Nicholas Galitzine, Ash Stymest and Gregg Sulkin auditioned for the Hardin's role and actresses Danielle Rose Russell, Lilly Van der Meer and Charlotte McKee audited for the Tessa's role. Performance and chemistry were a priority for producers.[5] It was months of auditions until on May 8 2018, Variety [6] announced in an official statement that Julia Goldani Telles and the english actor Hero Fiennes Tiffin were cast for the main roles. The actors were picked by Anna Todd herself, who fell in love with their chemistry together.

But in June 2018, actress Julia Goldani Telles announced in an open letter to fans her exit from the feature due to scheduling conflicts. In the same month, the Australian actress Josephine Langford was announced as the new interpreter of Tessa Young by the Deadline. [7].

Said Langford: “I’m so excited to be joining After as Tessa and to be able to bring her character to life. After-nators have been waiting so patiently to see this story and I’m thrilled to be a part of telling it.”

The auditions for the other characters of the film began in April 2018, names like Debby Ryan, Barbie Ferreira and Blake Michael came to audition. On July 20 2018, singer Pia Mia was cast as Tristan, a character who had sex changed in the film, since Tristan is a boy in the books. On July 21 2018, Samuel Larsen was cast as Zed Evans. On July 24 2018, Peter Gallagher was cast as Hardin's father, Ken Scott. On July 25 2018, Jennifer Beals was cast as Karen Gibson. On July 30 2018, Selma Blair was cast as Tessa's mother, Carol.

Filming

Principal photography was originally scheduled to begin in April 2018 in Vancouver, British Columbia, but as Tessa and Hardin's auditions were not yet finalized, they were postponed. On May 8 2018, with the announcement of the main actors, it was announced that filming would begin in June 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. But with the exit of Telles and the search of a new Tessa, the shooting was again postponed. Also in June, producer Jennifer Gibgot confirmed that shooting would begin officially on July 16 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. Production was completed on August 25 2018.

Release

After is scheduled to be released on April 12, 2019, by Aviron Pictures.[8]
