Joseph Young (conductor)

Joseph Young is an American orchestra conductor. He was formerly the Assistant Conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra.[1] In 2017, Young became the Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Artistic Director of Ensembles at the Peabody Institute.[2]

Education

In 2004, Young received a bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of South Carolina.[1] After graduation, he taught band at D. W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina. In 2007, Young became the first recipient of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra-Peabody Conducting Fellowship, which provides full tuition at the Peabody Institute and a stipend for living expenses.[3] At Peabody, he studied conducting under Gustav Meier and Markand Thakar, graduating in 2009,[1] and as a fellow, he received coaching from Marin Alsop, the Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.[3]

Career

Prior to becoming the Director of Ensembles at Peabody, Young served as assistant conductor of the Atlanta Symphony and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has held other positions including the Resident Conductor at the Phoenix Symphony and the American Conducting Fellow with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also performed with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta y Coro RTVE and Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música. In 2013, he was a Semi-finalist in the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg, Germany.[1]
