Joseph Thwaites (c.1780–1857) was an English trader[1] who served as delegate in The British Commercial Rooms.[2] He belonged to the group of British merchants, who had done business in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, between 1810 and 1830.[3]

Thwaites was born in London, England, in 1809 had arrived in the port of Buenos Aires in trade mission.[4] He settled with his family in the village of Ranchos, where they were owners of several hectares.[5] Thwaites was married with Juana Rubio del Rivero, criolla born in Buenos Aires,[6] sister in law of Daniel Gowland, member of a powerful Anglo-Saxon family established in Argentina.[7]
