Joseph C. Hoagland

Joseph Christoffel Hoagland (June 19, 1841 - December 8, 1899, Manhattan) was the president of the Royal Baking Powder Company.

Biography

He was born on June 19, 1841 in Ohio to Andrew Hoagland, and he had a brother, Cornelius Hoagland (1828–1898). By his marriage, in 1865, with Caroline C., daughter of John Matlack of Dayton, Ohio, he had three children, Raymond (1866-1927), John A. and Fanny L. Hoagland.[1][2]

He had an acrimonious split with his business partner, William Ziegler in 1888.[3] He died on December 8, 1899.[4]

He was descended from Sarah Rapelje, the first Woman of European descent born in New York to Dutch-settler parents.[5] His great great great granddaughter is Clare Balding, the BBC TV presenter, journalist and jockey.[5]
