Joker Xue (simplified Chinese: 薛之谦; traditional Chinese: 薛之謙; pinyin: Xuē Zhīqiān, born 17 July 1983),[1] formerly known as Jacky Xue, is a Chinese singer, comedian, record producer, actor, and television host.
Background
Joker Xue was born on 17 July 1983 in Shanghai. His mother had cardiac problems and deceased due to rheumatic heart disease when Xue was four years old.[2] In 2002, his father sold his house to pay for his tuition in Hotel Management at Switzerland's Glion Institute of Higher Education, but Xue returned to Shanghai due to homesickness and chose to drop out of university to pursue a career in music. After his return he was soon signed by an entertainment agency as an actor.
Career
In 2004, Xue passed the audition for a Chinese singing competition My Show (我型我秀), yet chose not participate in the competition. He re-auditioned in 2005, passed the audition by singing a self-composed song Yellow Maple Leaf (黄色枫叶), and made to the finals as the top 4 contestants. He then signed a 7-year contract with Shanghai SUM Entertainment Ltd (上海上騰娛樂有限公司) and started his singing career.
Xue released his debut album, Jacky Xue, in 2006, in which the song Serious Snow (认真的雪) was a hit. In the same year, he published two books Qian Jun Yi Fa and Qian Qian Jun Zi. In 2008, he published the photo album The Wind of the Pacific - Xue Zhi Qian's photo album.
After the 7-years contract with SUM Entertainment was about to end, Xue established his own businesses, including a hotpot restaurant (上上谦官方微博) and two apparel brands, UUJULY and Dangerous People (Dangerous People Taobao Page). His hotpot business was gradually expanded to five restaurants.[3] In 2013, he released his 6th album, An Unexpected Journey (意外).
In 2015, Xue signed contract with Ocean Butterflies International and released a 3-song concept EP, Gentleman.
Joker participates in over fifty variety programs in 2016 (as of August 2016), with roles including program judge, host, and guest.[4]
From April to July 2017, Xue Zhiqian 2017 Tour Concert was held in 10 cities in China.[5] Joker Xue Skyscraper World Tour started in July 2018.[6]
Scandal
In September 2017, internet celebrity Yutong Li revealed that Xue pursued her shortly after he was married to his ex-wife, Leixin Gao. Gao requested Xue 10 million RMB for divorce damages; after Xue and Li offered Gao the divorce damages together, Gao demanded an extra 10 million. Xue and Li later broke up after Li's abortion demanded by Xue, without Xue repaying back the portion that Li paid for Gao's divorce damages.[7] The incident caused an uproar in the Chinese internet.
In regards to money, Xue didn't take any advantage since larger amount was given rather than received. A confidential contract of their relationship was signed between the two parties at the cost of Xue's 2 million on February 4th, 2016.[8]
On June 16th 2018, Tony Zhang admitted helping Li in May 2017 to sell photos of Xue and Li to Wei Zhuo, China's No.1 paparazzo. According to this man, the amount negotiated with the paparazzo was as high as 10 million RMB. The negotiation was unsuccessful because the paparazzo was only willing to pay for 100 thousand.[9]
