John XXIII School, Bellvitge District of the city of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat is in Catalonia, Spain. It is coeducational, from kindergarten through secondary school, including professional and trades courses, and has been administered by the Society of Jesus since its founding in 1968.

History

In 1968, the Centre of Studies Joan XXIII began with 15 kindergarten children and a draftsman with 12 students. In 1974 construction began on the current building.

From the start literacy and professional training for adults was included in the curriculum, along with primary school through grade eight.[1]

in 1969/1970 first-year high school was added with 12 students. With property donated by the city on 80 Prado Street, classes encompassed literacy, introductory, undergraduate, and graduate, with several hundred students. Courses included draftsmen, welders, tilers, appliance repairmen, and IBM computer programmers. Recreational fields were added in 1975. The present building was completed in 1977. and there were then 1000 students. A community swimming pool was added in 1983, with the Government of Catalonia contributing. In 1990 a certificate program was introduced and recognized by local businesses, for students who did not reach the level of official certification. The baccalaureate program was added in 1993.

After the Balkans war, 20 electronics students with three teachers from the center organized a work camp in Sarajevo and Vrvovaic (Tuzla), and installed 50 electric heaters in the rebuilt houses, with financial help from business people in the City of L'Hospitalet. In 2003 a course in office skills was introduced for local women.

By 2016 the distribution of students was: infant 154, primary 313, secondary 443, baccalaureate 168, vocational certification programs 391, vocational non-certification programs 229 students.[2][3]

L'Hospitalet municipality is an apartment town on the outskirts of Barcelona built in the 1960s to accommodate working class migrants from the south of Spain, most of whom are immigrants from Latin America. The government assists by paying teachers' salaries. John XXIII has addressed the practical needs of the surrounding area, and its awards include the Spanish Government Education Prize in 2006 and the Economy Circle Prize in 2010[4] for achieving a 20% higher graduation rate than the Catalan average.[5] John XXIII is a part of the ECO Green network of 12 European schools which pioneer in "European citizenship" education[6] and share the stories of their innovative methods. The technical education program includes internships in local businesses.[7]
