John Peter Carter (born May 1961) is a British businessman, chief executive (CEO) of Travis Perkins, the FTSE 250 builders' merchant and home improvement retailer with 1,900 outlets.

Carter has worked for Travis Perkins for 35 years, having joined Sandell Perkins in 1978 as a management trainee. In January 2014, he succeeded Geoff Cooper as CEO.[2][3][1]

He is also a non-executive director of McCarthy & Stone.

Career

Carter joined Sandell and Perkins in 1978 as a management trainee and worked his way up the ranks of the company until they merged and became Travis Perkins. Carter eventually became managing director of operations in July 1996.

In July 2001, Carter was then promoted to executive director and held this rank until February 2005 were he became chief operating officer. In January 2012 he became deputy CEO until succeeding Geoff Cooper as the CEO in January 2014.

Carter has been responsible for a number of acquisitions, including Keyline in 1999, Wickes in 2005 and BSS Group in 2010.
