Johann Jakob Walter[1] (1604–1677[2]) is a Strasbourg painter and draftsman, who chronicled the life of Strasbourg during the Thirty Years War.
Biography
Johann Jakob Walter was born in Strasbourg on January 23, 1604, son of Gerard Walter[3]. He was probably trained in the workshop of miniaturist Friedrich Brentel. He left the city around 1618 and returned in 1635. He was elected to the Grand Council of the city in 1659. His meeting in Strasbourg with Count Jean de Nassau-Idstein was decisive for his career, since he was one of his most important patrons, He created several floral anthologies, two of which survive today, one at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the other at the National Library of France.
Johann Jakob Walter was also the great-uncle of the painter François Walter (1755-1830).
