JoJolion (Japanese: ジョジョリオン, Hepburn: Jojorion) is a seinen manga series written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki, and is the eighth part of the larger JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series. It has been serialized by Shueisha in the magazine Ultra Jump since May 19, 2011, and has been collected in 18 volumes totaling 74 chapters, with 5 additional chapters not yet volumized.

Plot

Set in the same continuity as Steel Ball Run, S-City, M-Prefecture (M県S市, Emu-ken, Esu-shi) was devastated by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. In the aftermath, strange structures are known colloquially as the Wall Eyes (壁の目 Kabe no Me) appear all over the town of Morioh (杜王町 Moriō-chō), with the ground beneath them having the strange property of swapping traits of whatever two objects are buried there. When a local college student named Yasuho Hirose finds a mysterious youth buried under one of the Wall Eyes, they set off on an adventure together to try to recover his identity.

The mystery deepens when the corpse of a man called Yoshikage Kira is found buried next to where he was discovered, whose body is missing several parts. Yashuo leaves the youth under the care of her suitor's father, Norisuke Higashikata IV, who takes him in and gives him the name Josuke while she attempts to figure things out from police reports. They also discover that the Higashikata family is related by marriage to the late Yoshikage Kira. Yasuho finds Yoshikage's mother, Holy Joestar-Kira, who stays in a Morioh hospital due to memory loss caused by an incurable disease. Meanwhile, Kyo Nijimura, Holy's daughter who works as a maid for the Higashikata household, reveals to Josuke that he is a composite of Yoshikage's missing body parts with that of another person, having undergone an equivament exchange from being buried under the Wall Eyes.

When Josuke later confronts Norisuke about the patriarch's intentions in taking him in, he learns that the Higashikata bloodline is cursed and they need Yoshikage's memories for a cure to prevent them from slowly turning to stone. The core component of this cure is the Rokakaka fruit, which cures people of various ailments when eaten, removes another aspect of themselves in exchange. Jobin Higashikata, the eldest of the family, has been using the family fruit parlour to smuggle these fruits into the country in cooperation with mysterious stone-based beings called Rock Humans. As they research the origin of the fruit further, they meet with several Rock Humans who try to hinder their investigation, while Josuke also discovers the truth of his own existence by meeting Karera Sakunami and later Damo Tamaki, both of whom have ties to his past.

In a series of flashbacks, Josuke is revealed to be a man called Josefumi Kujo, fused with the parts of Yoshikage Kira that were not present when his corpse was found. Josefumi first met Yoshikage in 1997 when his mother Holy saved the boy's life after he was left to drown. Twelve years later, Yoshikage requests Josefumi's help in stealing a Rokakaka branch from the Rock Humans, and grafting it onto another tree so they can use the fruit to cure Holy of her mysterious disease. The Rock Humans finally enact revenge for this in 2011, with Yoshikage fatally wounded as Josefumi attempts to save his life. But as Josefumi feeds Kira their last Rokakaka Fruit, they are buried alive during the Tōhoku earthquake under the ground on which Wall Eyes emerged: the same area of land where Yasuho later found Josuke.

Josuke resolves to use the Rokakaka fruit to cure Holy's illness, while the Higashikata family wants to harvest it for their own goals. As Josuke starts searching for the grafted branches Josefumi and Yoshikage left behind, he meets Rai Mamezuku, a plant appraiser, while also encountering more Rock Humans who wish to stop him, working on behalf of Jobin. Josuke intentions clash with Jobin's when the Rock Humans' superior Poor Tom gets involved, culminating in the entire Higashikata orchard being set on fire. In the confusion of the fight, Poor Tom is killed by assassins disguised as ambulance drivers, and Rai and Josuke mistakenly believe them to have taken the Rokakaka branch. In reality, Jobin used his son's Stand to mislead them.

By chance, Yasuho and Jobin's wife Mitsuba happen to be in the hospital where the ambulance went for unrelated illnesses. Yasuho notices Mitsuba in a wheelchair, with her feet turned to stone. She spots the doctor's name on an office sign and uses her Stand to research him, revealing that he is one of the two assailants that killed Poor Tom. Yasuho decides to interrogate Mitsuba about her doctor, Wu Tomoki. However, Mitsuba acts entirely ignorant, revealing that nothing's wrong with her; she doesn't even remember the wheelchair she was on. They suddenly spot two unknown shards on one the empty stools, only for Yasuho to notice that the wheelchair, dismembered and crushed, is hidden in a drawer. As she tries to call Josuke, the two shards appear rubbing against each other on her phone, emit a sound that stuns her as the shards enter her ear. Mitsuba, seemingly under Wu's control, drags her into the office and takes away her phone.

Characters

  • Josuke Higashikata[lower-alpha 1] is a young man with no memory of his past or name and is temporarily named "Josuke" by Yasuho after her dog. He would learn that he was originally Josefumi Kujo[lower-alpha 2], a friend of the Kira Family whose body was altered by the power of the Rokakaka Tree transplanting traits of Yoshikage Kira into him. He uses the Stand Soft & Wet,[lower-alpha 3] which allows him to produce soap bubbles that upon contact with an object can absorb, or steal an aspect of the object that can be used for other purposes, such as a person's eyesight or the friction of the floor.
  • Yasuho Hirose[lower-alpha 4] is a young woman who discovers Josuke and helps him search for his true identity. She uses the Stand Paisley Park,[lower-alpha 5] which has the ability to direct things around Yasuho, although Paisley Park acts on Yasuho's subconscious needs rather than her being able to directly control her abilities.
  • Norisuke Higashikata IV[lower-alpha 6] is the patriarch of the Higashikata family and runs a local fruit parlor. He uses the Stand King Nothing,[lower-alpha 7] which has the ability to track by scent while changing its physical appearance to resemble the target it is tracking.
  • Hato Higashikata[lower-alpha 8] is the eldest daughter of the Higashikata family, and is a fashion model. She uses the Stand Walking Heart,[lower-alpha 9] which allows her to extend her shoes' heels into spikes, which can be used as weapons and to walk up walls.
  • Joshu Higashikata[lower-alpha 10] is a college student who uses the Stand Nut King Call,[lower-alpha 11] which allows him to materialize nuts and bolts through objects or people's bodies; if the bolt is undone on a person, the limb it was attached to falls off.
  • Daiya Higashikata[lower-alpha 12] is a near-blind teenaged girl who uses the Stand California King Bed,[lower-alpha 13] which allows her to steal people's memories and store them within chess pieces, as long as she does not step on the victim's shadow.
  • Jobin Higashikata[lower-alpha 14] is the eldest son of the Higashikata family, and uses the Stand Speed King,[lower-alpha 15] allowing him to manipulate the temperature of his targets.
  • Tsurugi Higashikata[lower-alpha 16] is a nine-year-old boy, and Jobin's son, having pretended to be a girl as part of his family's tradition that the eldest Higashikata son poses as a girl until the age of 12 to avoid the evil eye. Tsurugi truly fears the family curse, allowing him to played by Yagiyama after seeing him restore a petrified dog with Rokakaka fruit which he named Iwasuke[lower-alpha 17]. Tsurugi uses the Stand [lower-alpha 18] which lets him create origami that upon touching a person gives them prospagnosia. It additionally allows him to create origami from other objects than paper and is able to control origami creatures he has made.
  • Kaato Higashikata[lower-alpha 19] is Norisuke's ex-wife and the mother of Hato, Joshu, Daiya and Jobin, and has served a fifteen-year sentence for the murder of a child. She uses a Stand that allows her to store objects in the middle of a deck of cards.
  • Kyo Nijimura[lower-alpha 20] is the Higashikata family's maid, and uses the Stand Born This Way,[lower-alpha 21] which takes the form of a robotic rider on a motorcycle, which attacks when its target opens an item, such as a door or a notebook. She is later revealed to be Holy's daughter and Yoshikage's sister
  • Rai Mamezuku[lower-alpha 22] is a plant appraiser and fruit grower who works for Norisuke's fruit company. He uses the Stand Doggy Style,[lower-alpha 23] which allows him to peel his flesh like an apple, turning it into a ribbon that he can manipulate.
  • Holy Joestar–Kira[lower-alpha 24] is an ophthalmologist from T.H. Medical University Hospital and an associate professor at Morioh's T.G. University. She is hospitalized, as parts of her brain and other organs are missing.
  • Yoshikage Kira[lower-alpha 25] is a doctor who is a descendant of Johnny Joestar through his mother and thus a distant relation to the Higashikata family. He was also a friend of Josefumi Kujo, who attempted to help him save Holy's life by stealing a Rokakaka Branch to use its fruit. But it ended with Yoshikage fatally wounded by the Rock People with Josefumi attempting to save him with last of the Rokakaka Fruit they stole before the two were buried alive by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The fruit takes effect with Kira's body parts being swapped with Josefumi's to turn him into Josuke, with what remained of Yoshikage's body uncovered a few days after Josuke was found. Yoshikage's Stand is Killer Queen[lower-alpha 26], which can produce exploding soap bubbles, its "soap bubble" aspect transferred into Soft & Wet.
  • Rock People are a mysterious group of humans who turn into stone when not conscious, having infiltrated Morioh under assumed aliases. They also have ties to both the Rokakaka Tree and Jobin, silencing anyone who learns of the former's existence. Currently, there are two selective groups of Rock People who are after the Rokakaka and its fruit including the following:
  • The Rokakaka Smuggling Organization is a mysterious, secret smuggling operation serve as the first collective antagonists in the start of the series, their goal is to secretly obtain and sell Rokakaka fruits:
    • Yotsuyu Yagiyama[lower-alpha 27]: The first of the Rock People to appear, tricking Tsurugi to help him kill Josuke while stealing the Higashikata fortune. Yagiyama's Stand is I Am a Rock[lower-alpha 28], which directs turns his target into a gravity well that pulls certain objects towards them.
    • Aisho Dainenjiyama[lower-alpha 29]: A Rock Person who is among the protectors of the Rokakaka Tree, attacking Yasuho and Tsurugi when he realized they were following him before the latter used his ties to Jobin to trick him into getting run over by a bus. Dainenjiyama's Stand is Doobie Wah![lower-alpha 30], which allows Dainenjiyama to create small tornadoes that automatically track down their target by means of their breath.
    • A. Phex Brothers[lower-alpha 31]: Twin Rock People who pose as street performers while targeting Karera before they come across Josuke, having played a role in the attempt on Josefumi and Yoshikage's lives prior. The older brother's Stand Schott Key No. 1[lower-alpha 32] allows him to transfer objects between his two hands, using it the younger brother's Stand Schott Key No. 2[lower-alpha 33] a soccer ball concealing a doll-like figure that releases a poisonous gas, for risky combination attacks.
    • Tamaki Damo[lower-alpha 34]: A Rock Person who set up the Damo Can Cleaning service as a cover, using Hato under to infiltrate the Higashikata estate to track down those who killed his allies. But he ends up being mortally wounded by Hato and then killed by Josuke. Damo's Stand is Vitamin C[lower-alpha 35], which allows him to render a living being's body malleable or completely liquefy into nothingness after they touch an object that has his fingerprints on it.
  • The Rokakaka Research Organization is a group working in the medical field whose interest in the Rokakaka fruit seems to stem from a desire to benefit their own race:
    • Urban Guerrilla[lower-alpha 36]: A Rock Person whose job is a doctor who was assigned to take down Rai before Josuke and Yasuho meet him to find the Rokakaka branch, he later attacks all three of them at Rai's summer home/ski lift in his pet Rock Animal Doramifasolati Do[lower-alpha 37]. Guerrilla's Stand is Brain Storm[lower-alpha 38], which can melt the flesh of anyone that comes in contact with him, they grab onto the skin and then break through into inside the victim's body. This causes hemolysis within the body while they constantly multiply as the target begins to break down into holes dug into the skin.
    • Poor Tom[lower-alpha 39]: A short, infant-like Rock Person covered in wrinkles and smokes cigarettes, he enlists Jobin after Guerrilla's defeat and tells him to bury his Stand Ozon Baby[lower-alpha 40] in the ground to prevent the others to find the branch only to betray him and trap him and his son Tsurugi in the Higashikata household viva his Stand. His Stand can depressurize an area upon activation and can inflict depressurization sickness in seconds, also any room will regain normal pressure closed when but still is dangerous as the pressure will gradually increase to lethal levels. Ozon Baby can also create illusions of itself, and getting close to it will the cause the body to cave in on itself.
    • Wu Tomoki[lower-alpha 41]: A Rock Person who's also a doctor specializing in orthopedic surgery and cosmetic dermatology, he's first seen by Yasuho examining Mitsuba's right ear and later curing her with a 200 million yen cure involving Rokakaka fruit. Yasuho suspects that he and an unknown fourth member of the group were involved in the death of Poor Tom. He has a currently unnamed Stand that uses stone fragments to take control of someone.
  • Dolomite[lower-alpha 42]: A limbless Rock Person whose real name is Masaji Dorokoma[lower-alpha 43], he is currently the only Rock Person not affiliated with any of the groups above. In the past, he was a carefree, handsome man until he saved his blind girlfriend from going into a power plant, destroying his arms and legs in the process; he was assigned by Jobin to take out Josuke. Dolomite's Stand is Blue Hawaii[lower-alpha 44], it can possess a person only by having someone touch something that belongs to the user like Dolomite's tooth, it can then possess another or more through the same process. It has to be physical so touching through something like plastic wrap doesn't count, but blood dropped onto another person or more does. Once it's done, the possessed victim(s) will go after a specific target the user desires, it's weakness though causes the possessed to walk in a straight, linear direction towards that target.

In the first volume, Araki described the story of JoJolion as being the solving of a "curse" (呪い, noroi). Curses, he goes on, are the sins of the ancestors and this makes people "unclean" (穢れ, kegare), and if this curse continues it will only turn into "resentment" (恨み, urami). Another theme is that from birth we see things as black and white, but this produces a "friction" (摩擦, masatsu) from what humanity really experiences. From these, the "curse" is lifted, this being the goal of the story.

On the inside cover of volume 2, Araki explained that the "...lion" in the title comes from both the Christian concept of blessing and the gospels ("evangelion" in Greek), the Ancient Greek myth of Pygmalion, and lions.

Reception

The first volume of JoJolion was the second best-selling manga for its debut week of December 19–25, 2011 with 237,374 copies sold.[1] The second volume ranked third, with 204,791 copies, for the week of April 16–22, 2012.[2] Its third volume debuted at number two for the week of September 17–23, selling 260,080 copies.[3] All three were some of the best-selling manga of 2012; volume one was 46th with 534,996 copies, volume two was 53rd with 516,040, and volume 3 sold 457,791 copies for 69th.[4][5] Volume four was number two for the week of May 12–18, 2013, selling 224,551 copies in its first week.[6] The 2013 edition of Kono Manga ga Sugoi!, which surveys people in the manga and publishing industry, named JoJolion the 12th best manga series for male readers.[7] It won the Grand Prize for manga at the 2013 Japan Media Arts Festival.[8]

The young man, now dubbed Josuke, is adopted by the Higashikata family. To return the favor of being given a home, Norisuke IV places him in charge of taking care of his blind daughter Daiya, who soon reveals she has a Stand and intends to use it to make Josuke her lover with her memory-stealing abilities.

Josuke finishes his fight against the strange biker Stand with the help of the navigation Stand, only to meet the biker Stand's user: the Higashikata's maid Nijimura. She reveals her true identity to Josuke and helps him figure out who he really is, or at least in part, while Yasuho discovers why Holy Joestar was admitted to Morioh's TG University Hospital. Several days later, Josuke asks Norisuke IV if he can begin attending school, and he tasks Joshu with bringing him to the local high school, which lies at the end of Morioh's infamous Shakedown Road.
