Jiz Lee (born October 30, 1980)[1] is an American genderqueer pornographic performer, whom Steve Javors of AVN Magazine has called "one of the major stars of the 'queer porn' set."[2][3] Assigned female at birth,[4] Lee prefers using epicene or gender neutral pronouns such as they, them, and theirs.[5]

Early life

Lee is a graduate of Mills College.[3]

Adult film career

Lee's first pornographic film was The Crash Pad for Pink and White Productions in 2005.[6] They initially only did scenes with lovers in their films,[7] and self-describes as a "self-agent"; only working with directors met beforehand first.[7] Jiz Lee continued to work with Pink and White Productions on Shine Louise Houston's feature 'SNAPSHOT'.

Screen Credits

In addition to their adult screen credits, Jiz Lee has appeared in numerous other queer and trans projects, including African American director, Cheryl Dunye's queer romantic comedy of errors, Mommy is Coming in which Lee appears with an international cast including the Black Boricua porn star Papi Coxxx.[8]

They have a recurring role as Pony, a dominatrix for the character Sarah Pfefferman in the series Transparent.[9][10]

Lee has also appeared in the series Sense8, the science fiction television series created by trans production team of Lana and Lilly Wachowski.

Activism

Lee is known as an advocate of sex workers' rights, and self-describes as a "pleasure activist".[11] They run the philanthropic porn experiment "Karma Pervs", which seeks to raise funds for sex workers' causes.[3] Jiz Lee is also significant figure in the genre of queer pornography.[12] Lee is also significant as a visible genderqueer person in porn.[13][14] Finally, they are considered a significant contributor to feminist pornography and women's pornography.[15] However, Lee themself does not use the term "feminist porn", and has stated that the term implies that porn cannot be inherently feminist.[16]

Lee's growing popularity may be attributed in part to the growing quantity of production of feminist pornography and queer pornography.[17][18] These genres of porn have grown significantly in marketing and consumption in the 21st century.[17][12][13]

Lee not only contributes to activism as an adult performer, but also as a writer. They are the editor of "Coming Out Like a Porn Star", a book that compiles the stories of adult performers.[19] One review defined the book as ""a lesson in social behavior and prejudice" directed at adult performers.[20] Porn scholar Lynn Comella describes the book as "a testament to the power of storytelling and the importance of sex workers telling their stories in their own words."[21] They have also released academic writing on feminism and porn.[22]

Lee has been interviewed in multiple articles on feminist issues and queer and trans issues, especially queer pornography.[23][16] Lee has spoken at academic institutions, such as Stanford and UC Berkeley, on queer sexuality and their experiences in porn. In numerous contexts, Lee has specifically addressed the use of gender neutral pronouns in their public statements.[24]

Personal life

Lee is genderqueer,[7][25] and their pronouns are they/them.[3][25]

Lee was previously in a relationship with fellow pornographic performers Syd Blakovich and Dallas. With Blakovich, they created the four-year performance art collaboration Twincest in 2004.[26]
