Jevšček (pronounced [ˈjeːu̯ʃtʃək]) is a small settlement in the Municipality of Kobarid in the Littoral region of Slovenia, right on the border with Italy.
History
During the 12th Battle of the Isonzo on October 25, 1917, Erwin Rommel encamped in Jevšček and studied his map for the advance on Mount Matajur.[2][3] For his accomplishments during the battle, Rommel later received the Prussian award Pour le Mérite.[4]
In August 2017, a memorial plaque to Erwin Rommel was installed at the Brgolič farm, where he had encamped during the night.[5] On October 22, 2017, for the centenary of Rommel's encampment in the village, the local community held an event in Jevšček with a presentation of Rommel's story at the Brgolič farm and formally opened a renovated trench from the First World War;[6] this trench was left unoccupied during the battle by the Italian forces, which allowed Rommel to enter the village unopposed.[2]
In 2017, the Italian journalist and writer Paolo Rumiz visited Jevšček during the filming of his documentary Strada di Rommel.[7] Strada di Rommel follows Rommel's path as described in his book Infantry Attacks. The documentary also follows Rommel to Jevšček and makes a stop at the Brgolič farm and the Nježna house.[8]
Cultural heritage
In 2015, a cultural monument of local importance, the Nježna House[8] (Nježna hiša) was renovated with the help of EU funds. The house is named after its last inhabitant, Pepa Nježna.
