Jesus Presented to the People

8th state

Jesus Presented to the People or Ecce Homo - oblong plate is an etching by Rembrandt of the ecce homo moment in the passion of Jesus, known in eight states. Only the last two states are signed and dated to the right ("Rembrandt f. 1655"), suggesting the artist regarded the others as only intermediate stages. He was inspired by Lucas van Leyden's 1510 etching of the same scene, of which he owned a copy. The work was the last etching of the Passion by Rembrandt, though he continued producing prints until 1662.
