Jesuit College is a kindergarten through secondary school in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1956 and occupies 20 acres of forested land in the center of the city. In 2015 the college was rated 51st nationally in Brazil among those schools that took the National Secondary Education Examination (Enem).[1]

History

Families in Juiz de Fora acquired a palm farm and persuaded the Jesuits to open a school there. Eleven years later the first headquarters of "Our Lady Immaculate College" opened in the city with seven Jesuits – two priests, three brothers, and two scholastics – and 40 students in attendance. The building was a century-old mansion.

The secondary school was added in 1958. With 154 students crowding the building, it was demolished and the land sold to enable the construction of the current building on Avenida Presidente Itamar Franco. In 1963 pre-primary was added and in 1964 the scientific course. Enrollment had grown to 416 students. By 1967 "Jesuit College" had 700 students, including six women.[2][3]

The school follows the guidelines for the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, that is oriented toward Christlike service. Since 2011, Jesuit College has offered indigent students ages 14 through 17 free education, including their uniform, books, and transportation.[4]

Facilities and activities

Facilities include the library, three computer labs, and laboratories for physics, biology, chemistry, and foreign languages. There is a children's playground and multipurpose gymnasium, indoor pool, indoor courts, and soccer field. Sports include basketball, futsal, gymnastics, karate, and volleyball.

Activities include social internships, volunteer work, Christian leadership project, consciousness raising,[5] choral group,[6] and classical ballet.[7]
