Jeremy Middleton
Jeremy Middleton CBE (born 19 November 1960) is a self-made businessman living in the North East of England. He co-founded HomeServe Plc, founded investment company Middleton Enterprises, has a commercial and residential property portfolio and is a non-executive director of Utilitywise Plc.
Education and career
Middleton, who was born in Wolverhampton and educated at Tettenhall College was the co-founder of 'Homeserve', a FTSE 200 insurance and maintenance company which is valued around £1 billion.[1][2]
As founder of the £50m investment company, Middleton Enterprises, Middleton has led investment in a number of companies, including Tyneside-based cable management company D-Line,[3] energy cost management firm Utilitywise,[4] and Atom Bank.[5]
In 2013, Middleton's firm, Middleton Investments, was one of the investors behind the Tim Roth film The Liability,[6] which was filmed entirely in Middleton's adopted home of the North East of England.
On February 18, 2016, Middleton became the first candidate to enter the North East mayoral race and subsequently resigned from the Conservatory Party.[7] The elections were subsequently cancelled after North East councils failed to agree on the central government's devolution package.
An advocate for the North East, Jeremy has served five years (2012-2016) on the board for the North East Local Partnership (NELEP).[8] One of the most prominent board members leading on areas such as access to finance and social enterprise. He is Chairman of the North East Devolution Commission.[9] A commission formed to demonstrate to the North East what benefits devolution could bring.
He is also governor of Studio West School and a board member of a charity for the homeless, Changing Lives.
He contested Newcastle upon Tyne East and Wallsend in the 1997 general election, losing to Nick Brown by over 23,000 votes, and has five times unsuccessfully contested seats on Newcastle upon Tyne City Council. In the 2004 European Parliament election he was listed second on the Conservative list in the North East region but again failed to be elected as the Conservatives won just one seat.
He was the local Conservatives candidate in the 2004 Hartlepool by-election, where he came fourth.
Middleton served as President of the National Conservative Convention from March 2008 to April 2009[10]
In April 2009, Middleton was elected onto the board of the Conservative party as Chairman of the National Convention.[11]
He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for political and charitable services.[12]
