Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JLNMC), Ajmer is a government medical college located in Ajmer, Rajasthan,[1] India being established in 1965 .It is one of the six government run medical colleges in western state of Rajasthan and was the fourth one to be established in the state.[2] It provides medical education with MBBS (Recognized by MCI since 1973 ) and MS/MD/DM degrees along with diploma and other degrees in some medical disciplines and is affiliated to RUHS (Rajasthan University Of Health Sciences ) .Before establishment of RUHS(in 2005), It was affiliated to Rajasthan University.[3][4] The college has attached teaching hospitals where general, specialty, super specialty care is provided to the region along with teaching and research purposes.It publishes journal titled "AJMER (Ajaymeru Journal of Medical Education and Research)".[5]

  • Jawaharlal Nehru (Victoria) Hospital : The attached teaching hospital originally called Victoria Hospital was established during colonial times, the old building of which now houses Ajmer Municipal Corporation.[6] In 1851 on orders of Col. Dixon a dispensary was constructed . In 1895 construction of the larger general hospital was started at a cost of Rs.43,250, raised partly by subscriptions and partly by the sale of the old building of dispensary[7] to mark the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria (1897 A.D.). In 1928, it was shifted to its present location and was renamed New Victoria Hospital which was further renamed JLN hospital in 1965.[8] It now serves as referral hospital of the Ajmer division of Rajasthan which includes districts of Ajmer, Bhilwara, Nagaur, Tonk.[9]
  • Kamla Nehru Memorial TB Hospital : It houses Chest & Resp. division of college to treat high footfall of TB patients in the region.[10] Adjacent to it lies STDC, Rajasthan.
  • Rajkiya Mahila Chikitsalya (Hospital) : It houses Obs . & Gynae department concerned with maternal and perinatal specialty care and is located 7 km away from the main campus .[11] In 1965 it started as ‘Panna Dhai Maternity Home ’ but due to lack of space was shifted to the Longia Hospital (a city dispensary) in 1968 and remained there till 1974. It was restructured as a separate hospital and shifted to its current building during 1999- 2000.

History

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College was established in 1965 with Dr. S. P. Wanchoo (At that time Spdt. Of "New Victoria Hospital") as its first Principal and Controller. It is named after the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.[12] The hospital to which college is attached was established much earlier in late 19th century. During Initital days medical school started its operations in old TB hospital building and around 1967 a new building was constructed in which it is currently housed.[12] It started with UG intake of 50 students per year in 1965 which was subsequently increased to 100 and currently 150/year .Recently it celebrated its Golden Jubilee year in December 2015.[13]

Admissions

There are 150 seats approved by Medical Council of India for MBBS and 88 seats for postgraduate course. Admissions are based upon highly competitive premedical entrance examination[14] NEET-UG for admission to MBBS and NEET-PG for admissions to postgraduate courses.[15] These examinations are conducted for admission into all the medical colleges in India.[15] A 15% of seats are reserved for candidates, selected through national quota and a few seats reserved for the students coming from underprivileged communities and defense personnel, rest of the seats are filled by state quota.[16]

Academics

For undergraduate courses, the duration of MBBS course is four and a half years of training with a year of compulsory rotatory internship.[14] After the successful completion of the training and internship the MBBS degree certificate is awarded by the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences.A minimum of 75% & 80% attendance is compulsory in theory and training classes respectively.

This school follows semester system with University Assessments held at intervals of 2Sem.[Preclinical], 2.5Sem.[Para-clinical] , 2Sem.[Clinical], 2Sem.[Clinical] respectively while in between these internal assessments of students are taken by medical school as required by MCI India for MBBS Currriculum in India .On completion of 5.5 years of training students are given registration certificate by the Rajasthan Medical Council(RMC) and are enrolled in the register of MCI and are legally allowed to practice medicine in India .

Postgraduate studies grant MD, MS , DM in various fields.

The degrees of this medical school are acceptable to all medical organizations in Canada and for applying for ECFMG certification.[17]

Campus

Located in the heart of city, Main Campus is surrounded by heritage landmarks viz. Anasagar Baradari, Circuit House (Earlier Office of Chief-Commissioner Of Ajmer-Merwara), Daulat Bagh, Akbari Museum. Adjacent to it lies Patel Stadium and Moolchand Chauhan Indoor Stadium & Academy.

Though most departments are on the main campus but Obs & Gynae department is present 7 km away in a separate campus. The Microbiology dept. houses State Reference Laboratory (Rajasthan).

College Library

The medical school campus has a central library, various other departmental libraries and a newly built E-libray with access to various E-Journals.It houses around 11000 bound journals dating back to 1960s.

Hostels

Hostels are separate for boys and girls and for UG & PG with mess being run by students on cooperative basis and are located on the main campus.
