Javier Gerardo Milei (born 22 October 1970) is an Argentine libertarian economist sympathetic to the Austrian School of economic thought. He became widely known in account of his regular TV appearances where he has been a sharp critic of Kirchner and Macri administrations. During a conference at the Provincial Theater, he was introduced by the presenter as "the Mozart of the economy".[1][2]

One important issue is that Milei makes constant use of mathematical formulae and charts throughout his writings in order to illustrate his points, which clearly contradicts the skeptical Austrian views on the usage of mathematics in economics, regarded by them as a social science. This is the main obstacle to frame Milei as an 'Austrian' economist. Although his conceptual framework is decidedly Austrian, his methodology is not.

Career

Having obtained a degree in economics at University of Belgrano (Licentiate) and having received two Master's Degrees at Instituto de Desarrollo Económico y Social (IDES) and Torcuato di Tella University, he became chief economist at Máxima AFJP (private pension company), head economist at Estudio Broda (financial advising company) and government consultant at International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. He used to be senior economist at HSBC as well.[3]

Since 2012, leads the division of Economic Studies, Fundación Acordar, a think tank of national scope.[4] He is also a member of B20, Economic Policy Group of International Chamber of Commerce (advisor to G20), and World Economic Forum. He is a specialist in economic growth with and without money and has been professor of several economic subjects in Argentine universities and abroad. He has authored more than 50 academic papers, nearly 100 journalistic articles, and 9 published books.[5]

For more than 21 years he has been University Professor of Macroeconomics, Economics of Growth, Microeconomics and Mathematics for Economists. Since 2013 he has been reading and lecturing on Austrian economics, about which he stated "Austrians' conceptual clarity is superlative and strongly dominates the rest of schools." Besides his academic career, Milei is the host of his own radio show named "Demoliendo mitos" (Demolishing myths), with frequent participations of the also libertarian economist Gustavo Lazzari and other personalities such as conservative writer Nicolás Marquez and libertarian economist Diego Giacomini.[6][7]

Milei holds some links with Fundación LIBRE, a conservative think tank presided by Agustín Laje.[8]

Personal life

He was born in 1970 to a bus driver.[9] Milei did high school at Cardenal Copello and decided to pursue a career in economics at age 12 after José Alfredo Martínez de Hoz Ministry led the economy to a devastating hyperinflation. In late adolescence and early adulthood he was goalkeeper of Chacarita Juniors until 1989.[10] He also sang in the band "Everest," which played mostly Rolling Stones covers.[9] In a TV show he declared that he currently never visits his parents and that "both of them are dead" to him. To support this view he recalled his college time in which his parents made his life miserable.[11]

Milei has been nicknamed "el Peluca" (the Wig) because of his eccentric hairstyle. [12] He has repeatedly said he does not comb his hair, and for this reason his hairstyle has received significant media attention.[13] Regarding his romantic life he has suggested in a La Nación interview that he is a champion of free love, and in a local TV program stated that he took part in several threesomes and that he is a Tantra instructor, in his words being "capable of remaining three months without ejaculating" (sic).[14][15] For this reason, he claims, is also nicknamed "Vaca Mala" (Bad Cow).[16] Nevertheless he identifies as a Catholic, who rejects the Magisterium of the Church.[17] With regards to abortion, he has publicly expressed a strong pro-life position.[18][19]

Controversies

In relation to the Economics School of University of Buenos Aires, he has controversially asserted: "the main producer of Argentina's economists is a Marxist indoctrination center," resulting in "the ubiquitous proliferation of Keynesian brutes."[9] Another controversy consisted in having stated that Domingo Cavallo was the only Minister that had made most for Argentina.[20]

On June 26th, 2018 Milei was delivering a conference in Metan, Salta, when he called journalist Teresita Frias an "ass" (sic) after she stated he is "totalitarian" due to his libertarian ideology.[21][22] As he refused to apologize, he was immediately reported to be exerting "gender violence" on her by the media, and a local court compelled him to be subject to a psychological examination. Family and Gender judge Carmelo Paz forbid him to take part in a public reunion as panelist or lecturer within the boundaries of the city of Metan lest he face legal charges.[23][24]
