Jason Steinhauer is an American public historian and inaugural director of the Albert Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest at Villanova University. He is a published writer, contributor to TIME, creator of the field of History Communication, a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, a member of the editorial board for The Washington Post's "Made By History" blog, and a Presidential Counselor of The National WWII Museum. He previously worked at The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.

Early life

Born in New York City, Steinhauer attended Solomon Schechter School of Westchester. He attended White Plains Senior High School with Sloane Crosley and Matisyahu. He received his B.A. from The George Washington University and a Masters in History and Advanced Certificate of Archival Management from New York University.[1]

Career

From 2002-05, Steinhauer was assistant curator at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, where he worked on the exhibit Ours to Fight For: American Jews in the Second World War. The exhibit was awarded the American Alliance of Museums' Grand Prize for Excellence in Exhibitions in 2004.[2]

From 2005-09, Steinhauer worked as an independent curator and archivist. He worked with the New-York Historical Society, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Museum of Chinese in the Americas, St. Thomas University and Yeshiva University.

From 2009-12, Steinhauer worked at the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, the nation's largest oral history project.

From 2012-2016, Steinhauer managed communications and programs for the John W. Kluge Center, the scholars center inside the Library of Congress.

Writing and media appearances

Steinhauer writes and appears in the media frequently on matters related to history. His writings have been published by TIME, CNN, Inside Higher Ed, the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Poynter, The White House, The Library of Congress, Perspectives on History, and History@Work. Media appearances include the 2016 AJ+ video on the electoral college (more than 7.5 million views on Facebook), C-SPAN's American History TV, Alhurra, NY1, BOLD TV, and State of Belief Radio. He is the host of a history YouTube channel and a history podcast. His book chapters include "The Iconography of the Twin Towers" in Recovering 9/11 in New York (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2014).

History communication

Steinhauer coined the term "history communicators" and created the new field of history communication.[3] Modeled on science communicators and science communication, the field aims to professionalize and formalize the skills necessary to effectively communicate history in the digital age. With colleagues, Steinhauer developed history communication coursework to integrate into history curricula at colleges and universities.

Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest

In December 2016, Villanova University announced that Steinhauer would serve as the first director of the Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest.[4] The Center was created through a $10 million gift from businessman Albert Lepage, a Villanova alumnus.

U.S. Department of State

In April 2017, it was announced that Steinhauer would travel to eastern Europe with the U.S. Department of State and speak with government officials, policymakers, scholars and students about fake news, fake history and history communication.[5]

Foreign Policy Research Institute

In October 2017, it was announced that Steinhauer would become a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, a think tank in Philadelphia, while continuing to serve as director of the Lepage Center.[6]
