Carr studied composition with Francis Shaw at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London’s Barbican Centre. In 1988 he won the Vivian Ellis Prize for young writers of musicals, and was invited by director Peter Hall to compose the musical Born Again (based on Ionesco’s absurdist play Rhinoceros). The musical was produced at Chichester Festival Theatre in 1990 with Broadway and Hollywood stars Mandy Patinkin and Jose Ferrer.[2][3]

Musicals include Christmas Carol, Water Babies and Velveteen Rabbit.

Work as an orchestrator includes the 5 Olivier Award-winning London revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George which transferred to Broadway[4][5], winning Jason the Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Orchestrations in 2008.[6] He has also orchestrated recent London productions of Annie Get Your Gun, La Cage Aux Folles and A Little Night Music (which transferred to Broadway with Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones).
