History

As a name, Jasmine is of English origin, referring to the plant of the same name.[1] However, in terms of etymology, the word jasmine can be traced back to Semitic Aramaic an ancestor of Arabic, and was adopted into Middle Persian (which adopted loanwords heavily from other neighboring languages), the ancestral language of modern-day Farsi. In Aramaic and Arabic the word is ياسمين pronounced ‘’yasmeen’’ and يسامينا (pronounced Yas-Mina). In Farsi the word evolved into the word yāsaman (Middle Persian: یاسمن) and, over time, the word evolved into yâsamin (Farsi: یاسمین). Yasmin, is a popular name in the Middle East and Latin America. Additionally, the plant jasmine is used as a basis for given names, typically feminine, in many languages, their origins unrelated to English or Persian.

Today, Jasmine is one of the most popular names in the Western world and has numerous spellings. In the United States, it entered popular use in 1973 and, from 1986 until 2008, was among the 100 most popular names for American girls.[2] In Turkey, Brazil, Israel, Hungary, Belgium, and Argentina, the name Jasmine, or one of its variants, remains popular.[3][4][5]
