Janet Sarbanes

Janet Sarbanes is an author and a professor of creative writing.[1] Her book Army of One and The Protester Has Been Released[2] are collections of short stories.[3][4]

Education

Sarbanes received her B.A. in comparative literature from Princeton[5] in 1989 and her PhD in English from UCLA.[6]

Career

Sarbanes teaches Narrative Theory at California Institute of the Arts.[3][7][8]

Army of One

Army of One was published in 2008 by Seismicity Editions in Los Angeles.[9][10]

The Protester has Been Released[11]

The text has ten short stories and one novella.[12] It was published by C&R Press, in April 2017.[13]

Sarbanes received the Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program for her essay “Reframing the House of Dust: A Meditation in Many Parts.”[14]

The piece was inspired after Cal Arts installed its own "House of Dust" in the spring of 2018.[15]

The project has been described as, “will consist of a series of journal entries meditating on the process of designing, constructing and activating the new house; Knowles’ original process; the history of Fluxus pedagogy at CalArts and its lasting influence; and questions around art and cybernetics and artists and housing raised by both projects.”[15]

Sarbanes is working on a novel with the aforementioned title.[16]

Personal life

Sarbanes' two brothers also attended Princeton. Sarbanes attended a for-girls private high school in Baltimore.[5] She lives in Los Angeles.[17] Her father is former politician Paul Sarbanes.
