Jamilah Tangaza (alternately Jamila Tangaza) is a Nigerian journalist and technocrat. She is a former BBC journalist, where she worked in various capacities before becoming Head of Hausa Service. Tangaza is a Fellow of Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford and member of Chartered Management Institute of the United Kingdom[1][2]

Early life

Tangaza was born in the Northern Nigerian city of Kano.[3]She was appointed as the Head of Abuja Information Management Systems, AGIS in 2013.[1]

Journalism career

Tangaza started working with the BBC World Service in 1992 as a producer responsible for producing, planning and presenting news and current affairs programmes for the BBC Hausa Service, a position she held until 1994. She became Senior producer in 1994, tasked with more administrative work, overseeing production and supervising staff and reporters in the West Africa region.[4][5] She worked with other BBC departments both in presenting and producing programmes including BBC World Service’s English flagship programme, Outlook and the BBC’s English for Africa programmes, Focus on Africa and Network Africa.[4]

Two years after establishing BBC Abuja office in 2004, Tangaza was deployed to Nigeria as the BBC’s Abuja editor, responsible for planning and co-ordinating BBC’s coverage from Nigeria. [4] She became acting Head of BBC Hausa in 2005 and served from 2005 to 2006.[3]

Before Tangaza left the BBC she was Head of BBC Hausa. She was responsible for overseeing the production and transmission of the Service’s daily output on radio and web content. She ran two production teams – in London and in Abuja; and managed BBC Hausa staff that included producers, journalists and field reporters in Nigeria, Niger, Ghana and Cameroon.[3]
