James Kempton is a senior non-executive board member of Ofsted[1] and served as Interim Chair in 2016-17. James chairs the Department for Education's Oldham Opportunity Area Partnership Board[2] leading the drive to improve social mobility in the area.
He is Trustee (Chair from 2012-16) of the youth theatre group Company Three[3] and is a governor of the Cripplegate Foundation.[4]
James has 25 years’ experience as a school governor and is currently a governor of New North Academy[5] in Islington.
James was Director of Education and Social Policy at the think tank CentreForum 2012-15. As Clerk and Chief Operating Officer from 2015-16 he was instrumental in setting up the new Chartered College of Teaching.
He was a former British Liberal Democrat local government politician and leader of Islington Council (2006-2009).[6] He was councillor for Holloway ward (1994-2002) and St Mary's (2002-2010), representing the area where both he and his mother were born. He was council deputy leader 2000-2006. James also led on children and young people’s issues for London Councils and was a member of the London Skills and Employment Board.[7]
