James Gettis

James Gettis (born May 4, 1816 - December 14, 1867)[1] was a lawyer, pro-slavery secessionist, Master Mason, American Party member, city councilman, state representative, and judge in Tampa, Florida. He was from Pennsylvania and came to Tampa in 1848. He was the second lawyer admitted to the bar in Tampa. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War for a brief period before returning to Tampa due to ill health.[1] He promoted development of Tampa and sought to bring rail service to the area. He is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery in downtown Tampa.[2]
