James Bickerton Fisher

James Bickerton Fisher (1843–1910) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament from the West Coast, New Zealand.

He represented the Buller electorate from 1879 to 1881, when he retired.[1]

He was a Sergeant in WW1 with 21st Reinforcements, Wellington Infantry. They had one son, Bruce Hamilton Aveling born in Wellington on 04 July 1914. 2nd Marriage 28th Dec 1886 in Oamaru Rose Louisson Born 1862 Died 1915 aged 53 Children 1: George B Fisher Born 26th May 1888 Died 1974 aged 86 2: Dorothy B Fisher Born 29th Nov 1889 Died 1974 aged 85 Occupation: James Bickerton Fisher was born in Diss, England. He was a solicitor in ChCh in 1868. From 1870 he worked in Westport and was the crown prosecutor for Westland and represented that district in the House of Representatives before returning to ChCh in 1882, becoming a partner in Garrick, Cowlishaw and Fisher, solicitors of Gloucester Street and he was also the City Solicitor. James retired on 1st Jan 1910 aged 67 and died after a short illness at his home “Upton” in 97 Blights Road Papanui. James was not only recognized as a most able lawyer but also as a soul of kindness, and generosity, always genial and willing to help. After his death his estate was valued at 24,266 pounds. Helen Nicol “known as Nellie” was the daughter of Gilbert Nicol from Rosehill, in Wamambool, Victoria, Australia. She died 9 days after giving birth to her daughter Nellie. Rose was the daughter of Cecil Louisson an Hotelier and brewer of England then Australia and later ChCh and P/North.
