Jacques Greene is the artist name of Philippe Aubin-Dionne. He has produced for vocalists Katy B, Tinashe and How to Dress Well, and has remixed Radiohead, Autre Ne Veut, Shlohmo, and many others. Jacques Greene has expanded his collaborations to include fashion with cult Canadian designer Rad Hourani and art institutions including London's Tate Modern. Jacques Greene released his debut album, Feel Infinite in 2017 on LuckyMe.
History
Jacques Greene began creating electronic music when a high school history teacher introduced him to Aphex Twin, precipitating a realization that "music doesn't have to be angry white men over a guitar."[1] Greene learned about electronic and dance music, and clubs and after-parties, in a tight-knit yet varied community.[1] He and his friends would throw club parties called Turbo Crunk.[2] From 2008 to 2011, Turno Crunk's key players were Hadji Baraka, Ango Seb Diamond, Lunice, and Jacques Greene.[2]
In 2011, Jacques Greene released the single "Another Girl," which Pitchfork included in its list of best tracks of the decade. The magazine wrote that while this "decade has seen no shortage of dance songs that pluck vocals from R&B and warp them into unfamiliar shapes[,] 'Another Girl' emerged just before reworked deep Brandy cuts dominated SoundCloud dashboards, and it still moves with a distinctly human gait." The Village Voice wrote that "Another Girl" "remains the shimmering peak of [Jacque Greene's] style."
Vase Records
Jacques Greene is Co-owner of Vase records along with former-manager, Joe Coghill. Vase was established in 2011 with the aim of releasing Jacques Greene's own records but has since released music by artists, Koreless, Zodiac, Arclight, Samoyed and Gorgeous Children.[3]
EPs
Concealer EP On 30 January 2012, Jacques Greene released a 3 track EP by the name of 'Concealer' under the Vase imprint. Concealer directly reflects the Electronic, R&B sampled vocal sound Jacques Greene has become best known for. Also featured on the record were original vocals by fellow Montreal musician, Ango in the track 'Flatline'.[4]
On Your Side EP Jacques Greene released the On Your Side EP on 3 June 2013, via Lucky Me records. The title track of the same name featured a guest vocal appearance from artist Tom Krell aka, How To Dress Well.[5]
Painted Faces (Songs from Scratch) A new project in 2013 between Yours Truly and Adidas Originals saw a new series of songs emerge, created by collaborating artists. The series named, 'Songs From Scratch', included a special joint track between Jacques Greene and emerging singer at the time Tinashe called, 'Painted Faces'. The series also included the likes of, Danny Brown, Lunice.[6]
After Life After Party EP On 12 November 2014, Jacques Greene released the 'After Life After Party' EP under Lucky Me Records. The EP comes with two remixes, one from hip-hop producer Suicideyear and another from Turbo-affiliated Scot Sei A.[7]
Feel Infinite
'Feel Infinite' (2017) is a record about the utopian idea of club culture - music about the club, as well as for the club in and of itself. Written over the course of two years, this debut album is the purest, most personal expression of the Jacques Greene sound. Present on the record are Jacques Greene RnB vocal chops that he popularised in new club music - but here he returns to their original purpose: his own reference to Masters Of Work. Where they drew from their primary influence in disco, JG draws upon his own formative chart music.
As a debut album 'Feel Infinite' is the culmination of the world of Jacques Greene in that it feels like a closing of a loop that includes a close team of collaborators who are all personal friends and accomplices, the majority of whose roots stem from Montreal's fiercely independent art and music scenes. The creative spirit of Montreal is deeply imbued within the record. "I kept the collaborations really limited and to people I have real relationships with - an appreciation and respect for the world around me," says Jacques Greene of the one vocal collaboration with How To Dress Well and artistic collaborations with visual artist and designer Hassan Rahim, director Melissa Matos (of Trusst) and photographer Mathieu Fortin. "I never want to forget my place within the world - my city, my identity. The record is a very deliberate exercise in kind of consolidating the Jacques Greene world while also throwing nods at influences and the context of my music."
