Jacob William Hoggard (born 9 July 1984) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer of the pop-rock band Hedley. Before Hedley was formed, Hoggard competed on the second season of Canadian Idol, in 2004; he placed third.[1]

Early life

Jacob Hoggard was born on 9 July 1984, in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.[2] He was raised in Abbotsford, British Columbia and Surrey, British Columbia.[3] He is of partial Italian origin.[4][5] He was educated in Surrey, British Columbia at Senator Reid Elementary School and Mennonite Educational Institute, Yale Secondary School in Abbotsford and at L.A. Matheson Secondary School.[6]

Personal life

Hoggard married his high school sweetheart in 2005, which ended in divorce in 2009.[7]

Allegations of sexual misconduct and rape

On 25 February 2018, an Ottawa woman accused Hoggard of raping her after the pair met on Tinder in November 2016. Attorneys for Hoggard denied the allegations in a statement sent to CBC News on his behalf, stating that their interaction was consensual.[8] On 28 February 2018, Hoggard announced that he would be stepping away from his career indefinitely following Hedley's tour.[9]

On 5 March 2018, a Toronto woman also accused Hoggard of rape, detailing an encounter she had with him in March 2013 that shared numerous details with the allegations of his first accuser. Hoggard stated that this, too, was consensual, and that the allegations were "startling and categorically untrue". The identities of both women have been withheld for their privacy.[10]

On 16 March 2018, the Toronto Police Service Sex Crimes Unit confirmed that it has opened an investigation into Hoggard.[11]

On 23 July 2018, Hoggard was arrested and charged with one count of Sexual Interference and two counts of Sexual Assault Causing Bodily Harm.[12]
