JAMA Psychiatry [1] (until 2013: Archives of General Psychiatry) is a monthly, peer-reviewed medical journal published by the American Medical Association. It publishes original articles of general interest to clinicians, scholars, and research scientists in psychiatry, mental health, behavioral sciences, and related fields. The journal seeks to inform and to educate its readers as well as to stimulate debate and further exploration into the nature, causes, treatment, and public health importance of mental illness. All clinical trials published in the journal are strictly classified according to ICMJE criteria, regardless of classification by a funding agency, and have to abide by the recommendations laid out by the ICMJE. JAMA Psychiatry is a member of the JAMA Network family of journals, which includes twelve journals, known collectively as The JAMA Network. [2]


History

The Archives of Neurology & Psychiatry began publication in 1919 and, in 1959, became 2 separate journals: Archives of Neurology and Archives of General Psychiatry. In 2013, their names changed to JAMA Neurology and JAMA Psychiatry, respectively.


Journal Frequency and Access

JAMA Psychiatry is published online weekly, every Wednesday, and 12 print/online issues per year. The journal receives more than 2.8 million online visits annually, with 3.7 million article views and downloads. All research articles are free open access 12 months after publication on the website, or free on the day of publication on the html app JAMA Network Reader. [3] In addition, the online version is freely available or nearly so to institutions in developing countries through the World Health Organization's HINARI program.


Editorial Information

The journal's acceptance rate is 15% of the 1200+ manuscripts received annually. The median time to first editorial decision is 2 days, and 36 days with review. The median time from submission to acceptance (with time for author revision) is approximately 2 months and from acceptance to publication is 10 weeks. All major articles are published online first.
