José Inés García Chávez

José Inés García Chávez (Inés Chávez García) was a Mexican military man and bandit who participated in the Mexican Revolution.

Early life

He was born in Godino Michoacán, on April 19, 1889. He was the son of Anacleto García and Bartola Chávez.

Career

He was a cameraman in the Porfiriato and thus fought Santana Rodríguez Palafox in Veracruz. They rose against Victoriano Huerta under Anastasio Pantoja, but when the Carrancistas shot him, Garcia Chavez (as he is known) rose up in arms as a Villista. He operated in the Abajoña of Michoacán and in the limits with Jalisco and Guanajuato, and recruited thousands of soldiers.

His procedures were guerrilla/bandit: his greatest success reached came in 1917. In 1911 he joined the maderistas ranks in Zacapu, under the control of General Gertrudis Sánchez. His army was feared in all regions of Michoacán, Jalisco and Guanajuato, for its brutality, especially towards women and children. Between 1915 and 1918, Inés Chávez, torched the towns of Apatzingán, Paracho, Cotija and Degollado, known as "The Attila of Michoacán, Jalisco and Guanajuato", to the control of its army, known as "The Painted Leopards".

Death

He died in 1918 in the battle of Huandacareo, on 8 of January, after assaulting several towns. Another version is that he died in the Presidency of Purepero Michoacan, November 11, 1918 at 5:30 pm. Father Francisco Esquivel tells the story of García Chávez's death in his book Ines Chavez Muerto. In the same book he tells us the reasons why García Chávez never caused mischief in Purepero, because his staff relatives had family living in Purepero. Another story in the same book tells about his visits to the town each time with his followers. On one occasion a member of the orchestra of Purepero Pedro Ortega, tells of returning from finishing a "play" in Panindicuaro when they met with García Chávez who asked them to perform some songs for him and his troop. In Uriangato, Chávez Garcia was defeated on June 24, 1918. The President of the Republic, Venustiano Carranza, celebrated the triumph achieved for the neighbors of Uriangato. Some sources mention that Chávez García died in the month of November 1918.
