Isa Ibrahim (Malay: Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Isa bin Pehin Datu Perdana Manteri Dato Laila Utama Haji Ibrahim; born 9 May 1935), is a Bruneian politician and lawyer who currently serves as the Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Special Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei.
Early life
Pehin Isa was born in 1935.[1] He is the son of the first Chief Minister of Brunei, Ibrahim Mohammad Jahfar.
He studied Bachelor of Arts (Law) at University of Southampton where he graduated in July 1961.[1] In February 1962, he qualified Barrister-at-Law from Middle Temple, London.[1]
Political career
As a qualified lawyer, Pehin Isa joined the Brunei government service as an Assistant Counsel and Deputy Public Prosecutor in Legal Department. [1]In February 1963, he was appointed as Secretary to Brunei delegation at negotiations on the merger with Malaysia. With his broad experience in law, he was appointed by the government as Brunei's Deputy Attorney General in January 1968.[1]
In October 1970, Pehin Isa was designated as Deputy Chief Minister of Brunei. A year later, he was assigned as General Advisor to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.[1]
After independence
After Brunei's independence on 1 January 1984, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah appointed Pehin Isa as Minister of Home Affairs and Special Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in October 1986.[1] He hold the portfolios for almost 20 years until 2005.
Like his father, Pehin Isa was appointed as Speaker of Legislative Council succeeding Pengiran Indera Mahkota Pengiran Anak Dr. Kemaluddin al-Haj in February 2011. He assumed the position for five years.
After a Cabinet reshuffle in January 2018, Pehin Isa is re-appointed as the Sultan's Special Adviser and is designated as Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.[2]
Personal life
Pehin Isa is married to Datin Seri Utama Hajah Rosnah binti Abdullah. Together, they have five children.[1]
