Iron Horse Trail, Ontario

The Iron Horse Trail was once the rail link running between Waterloo and Kitchener. It has been converted to a bicycle and walking trail. It covers a distance of 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi).[1] The rail trail was opened on October 5, 1997 on an abandoned Canadian Pacific Railway line. The two cities combined resources to purchase the property. It is part of the Trans Canada Trail and connects the downtown areas of Kitchener and Waterloo from Victoria Park to Waterloo Park.[2][3]

The Trail crosses some city streets which has led to concern about pedestrian safety, particularly at Victoria St. In January 2018, the City of Kitchener agreed to make some changes in the area that many Trail users take to cross that street. At the time, the City indicated that an additional section of the Trail would be completed by the end of 2019.[4][5]
