The International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique, and Applications (IUVSTA) is a union of 33 science and technology national member societies whose role is to stimulate international collaboration in the fields of vacuum science, technique and applications, and related multi-disciplinary topics.

IUVSTA is a Member Scientific Associate of the International Council for Science (ICSU).

Founded in 1958, IUVSTA is an interdisciplinary union which represents several thousands of physicists, chemists, materials scientists, engineers and technologists who are active in basic and applied research, development, manufacturing, sales and education. IUVSTA finances advanced scientific workshops, international schools and technical courses, worldwide.

IUVSTA comprises member societies from the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and USA.

The main purposes of the IUVSTA are to organize and sponsor international conferences and educational activities, as well as to facilitate research and technological developments in the field of vacuum science and its applications.

The history and structure of the Union are described in two articles [1][2] in scientific journals.

IUVSTA has nine technical divisions:

Key Activities

  • The organization of a triennial Vacuum Congress and Exhibition, which concerns all areas of activity of the Union
  • The organization of a triennial International Thin Film Conference [4]
  • The co-organization, together with the European Physical Society, of the Annual European Conference on Surface Science (ECOSS) series of conferences
  • The organization of the biennial European Vacuum Conference series
  • The organization of the biennial VACUUM and SURFACE SCIENCES CONFERENCE of ASIA and AUSTRALIA (VASSCAA)
  • The organization of workshops on front-line research
  • An education program applicable to both technically developed and developing countries
  • Web news bulletin including information on activities, conferences and educational programs
  • Interaction with the International Organization for Standardization on the establishment of international vacuum standards [5]
  • The awarding of international prizes
